A desktop business-management application I designed and built myself — one of my first substantial projects and still the one I am fondest of. It handles inventory, sales and purchase entry, customer and supplier ledgers and reporting, with a login-gated multi-user setup, written in Python.

Software written to run a business you are actually running has a short feedback loop and an unusual honesty to it — a feature that does not help gets removed within days, because you are the one it is failing.

Inventory and reporting is the pairing that most small operations need and few small tools do well. Stock is a running balance that has to be reconstructible from movements rather than stored as a number, or a single miscount becomes permanent. Reporting is the other half of the same requirement: a report is only trustworthy if the underlying movements are, which is what makes an append-only record the right foundation.
