Word Counter

Live word, character and sentence counts with reading time and Flesch readability scoring.

Flesch Reading Ease scores a passage from two measurements: average sentence length, and average syllables per word. Both push in the same direction — long sentences full of long words score low. Roughly 60 to 70 is plain English that most adults read comfortably; below 30 you are writing something closer to a legal document than a page someone skims.

The score is a blunt instrument and worth treating that way. It cannot tell whether the writing is any good, and it can be gamed by chopping every sentence in half. What it is genuinely useful for is catching the paragraph you wrote at the end of a long day, where four clauses stacked up without you noticing.

Character counts matter separately from words, because the places that truncate you count characters: a meta description gets cut around 155, and a page title around 60.
