Waveform decides timbre. A sine is a single frequency with no harmonics and is the right choice for testing, because anything you hear beyond the fundamental is your equipment rather than the signal. Square and sawtooth are rich in harmonics — useful for hearing what a system does to the top end, and considerably harsher to listen to.

Two safety notes that are not optional. Set the volume low before starting, because a pure tone at a level that feels moderate carries far more energy than music at the same setting. And a frequency you cannot hear can still be loud enough to damage hearing, so trust the meter rather than your ears at the extremes.
