Browser speech synthesis uses voices installed on the device, so what is available depends on the operating system rather than on the page — the same text sounds different on a Mac, a Windows machine and an Android phone, and a voice present on one may simply not exist on another.

Rate and pitch are worth adjusting for the purpose. Proofreading is the use that surprises people: hearing your own writing read aloud catches repeated words, missing words and sentences that run out of breath, because your eye skips over all three when reading text you wrote yourself.
