Generate a polished README, a .gitignore and a LICENSE for your project.
A README is read in a specific order by someone who does not yet care about your project: what is this, what does it look like, how do I install it, how do I use it. Sections below that can be as long as you like. Getting the first four right is most of whether a repository gets a second minute.
The LICENSE choice is the consequential one. MIT permits nearly everything with attribution; Apache 2.0 adds an explicit patent grant; the GPL family requires derived work to stay under the same terms. No file at all means default copyright — all rights reserved — so an unlicensed public repository is legally unusable, which is rarely what the author intended.
