Number to Words

Spell out any number in plain English words. Free, runs entirely in your browser — no signup, and nothing you paste in is uploaded.

Spelling a number out is grouping in threes and then handling the exceptions. English has irregular words for eleven through nineteen, hyphenates the compound tens, and repeats the same hundred-and-something pattern at every scale — which is why the algorithm is one small function called once per group.

The variations are worth naming because cheques and contracts depend on them. British English inserts "and" before the final part, as in one hundred and five, where American English drops it. Scale names diverge above a million historically, though the short scale — a billion being a thousand million — is now standard in both.
