Morse timing is defined in units of one dot. A dash is three, the gap within a letter one, between letters three, between words seven — and getting those ratios right is what makes the output decodable rather than merely rhythmic.

Learners are generally taught with the characters sent fast and the gaps stretched, so that each letter is recognised as one sound rather than counted out symbol by symbol. Counting dots is the habit that becomes the ceiling later, which is why the method deliberately makes counting impractical from the start.
