An accented downbeat is what turns a click into a bar. Without it you can play in time and still lose your place in the phrase, which is the actual problem when practising anything with a repeating structure.

The most useful practice technique is deliberately awkward: set the tempo slower than feels comfortable and only raise it once a passage is clean. Playing something fast and wrong rehearses it wrong. Dropping the click to every other beat is the next step, since it forces you to keep time internally rather than following.
