An invoice is a legal document more than a design exercise, and what makes it valid is jurisdictional: an invoice number, both parties' details, the date, a clear description of what was supplied, and the tax treatment. Sequential numbering is a requirement in many places, not a convenience.

The arithmetic detail worth getting right is where tax is applied and how rounding works. Rounding each line and then summing gives a different total from summing and then rounding, and which one is correct depends on local rules — a discrepancy of a cent is enough to make an invoice disagree with an accounting system.
