Detect embedded image metadata and export a clean copy with EXIF/GPS stripped.
EXIF is metadata the camera writes into the file, and it is more than people expect: timestamp, camera model, exposure settings, and on a phone the GPS coordinates where the photo was taken. That last one has outed home addresses often enough to be a well-documented privacy failure.
Some platforms strip it on upload and some do not, and there is no way to tell by looking. Stripping before sharing is the reliable answer. Worth knowing that orientation also lives in EXIF, so a naive scrub can leave a photo rotated ninety degrees — the tag has to be applied to the pixels before it is discarded.
