Tap along to a beat and read the tempo in BPM. Free, runs entirely in your browser — no signup, and nothing you paste in is uploaded.
Tempo from tapping is the average interval between taps, inverted into beats per minute. Averaging over more taps converges faster than any single interval, which is why the reading settles after about eight and wobbles before that.
The systematic error is your own latency: most people tap slightly behind the beat, but consistently, and a consistent offset cancels out when you measure the gaps rather than the absolute positions. What does not cancel is tapping on the wrong subdivision — landing on eighth notes gives exactly double the real tempo, which is the usual explanation for a reading of 240.
