Anagram search is a dictionary problem rather than a permutation one. Generating every arrangement of eight letters means forty thousand strings; sorting the letters of each dictionary word into a canonical key and looking that up finds the same answers instantly, which is why a good solver is fast on long racks.

Scoring is where the two big word games diverge. Scrabble and Words With Friends use different letter values and different premium-square layouts, so the same play is worth different amounts — and the highest-scoring word is frequently not the longest one, since a short word crossing two premium squares often beats a bingo laid on plain tiles.
