Flesch Reading Ease combines average sentence length with average syllables per word, and the two push the same way — long sentences of long words score low. Roughly 60 to 70 is comfortable general prose. Flesch-Kincaid converts the same inputs to a US grade level, which is why many style guides target grade 8 or 9.
Both are blunt and both are gameable by chopping sentences in half. What they are genuinely good for is catching the paragraph written at the end of a long day, where four clauses stacked up without you noticing — a drop in score flags it faster than rereading does.
