Fuel economy from a single fill-up is noisy, because it depends on where you drove, how full the tank was and how consistently you stopped filling. The number worth watching is the rolling average over several fills, which is where an actual change shows up.

And a change is worth noticing. A gradual worsening in economy is one of the earlier signals of tyre pressure dropping or a mechanical issue developing, and it shows up in the numbers well before it shows up in how the car feels. Cost per distance is the figure that makes it concrete.
