Compose, validate and learn Conventional Commits — gitmoji, footers, header meter, a linter for pasted messages and a full cheatsheet.
Conventional Commits is a small grammar — a type, an optional scope, a colon and a description — and its value is entirely downstream. Because the type is machine-readable, tooling can derive a version bump and generate a changelog without anyone maintaining one by hand.
That is also where the rules matter: feat implies a minor bump, fix a patch, and a breaking change marked with ! or a BREAKING CHANGE: footer implies a major one. Getting the type wrong produces a wrong version number automatically. A header length meter is worth having for the older convention it inherits — around 50 characters, so git log --oneline stays readable.
