Reward optimisation is a small constrained problem: which card yields most for this purchase, given category rates, rotating quarterly categories that need activating, and spend caps that silently drop the rate once exceeded.

The caps are what most people miss, since a five percent category frequently applies only to the first fixed amount per quarter, after which the card is worse than a flat-rate alternative. Worth stating plainly that reward maths only works if the balance is cleared monthly — interest at typical card rates exceeds any cashback rate by an order of magnitude.
