A 60-second ritual that turns dread into your first action — breathe, name it, shrink it, start.
Task avoidance is usually about the size of the task rather than its difficulty. A large, vague obligation triggers avoidance; a small, specific first action does not, which is why the standard advice is to shrink the step until it stops being frightening.
Adding breathing at the front is doing something separate and physiological. A slow exhale longer than the inhale engages the parasympathetic response and lowers arousal within about a minute, which is a real and quick effect. Naming the thing you are avoiding is the third piece: unnamed dread stays large, and written down it is usually smaller than it felt.
